Studies dating back as early as 1940 have shown that a child’s IQ can be increased by more than 50 points through the proper stimulation in the first 6 years of life. Your child already has certain natural skills, but you can help further develop those skills through the power of play with the right developmental toys and educational games. You possess the power to help improve your child’s skills such as memory retention, reading skills, motor skills, eye-hand coordination and math skills.

There are a variety of educational toys that are available for children as soon as they are able to grab things. An educational toy can be something as simple as a puppet or matching shapes. These toys prompt the child to think and the colorful pieces that come with these toys make the activity interesting. What can makes these activities even more beneficial is when the parent is involved and takes time to praise the child when he or she is successful.

The most important factor in selecting learning toys for your children is choosing a toy that is appropriate for your child’s age. You should start by determining the child’s current developmental needs, both physically and emotionally. Then, look for the educational toys that are appropriate for your child’s stage of development.

Years ago, toy manufacturers started out by making educational toys that covered everything from preschool through high school. These toys confused some children and did not appeal to most. However, through the years, the top educational toy makers started to make better use of research and technology, and have done quite a good job creating quality educational toys and learning games targeted to a child’s age group and skill level.

Every parent loves to think that they can help their child to achieve the skills they need to cope in the world as they grow up and buying them educational toys is a large part of this. An educational toy is one that helps the child to develop skills of some kind. Learning maths certainly doesn’t need to be boring for your children in view of the wide variety of educational math toys that are available. Make the learning of this essential skill fun and exciting. Take advantage of the many toys that have visual and moving elements, to make math more real. The learning patterns from using these educational toys have been proven to help children improve their counting abilities.

Choosing the right educational toys and games for your children at a young age will make sure that they start out in live with the right learning environment. In order to learn, it is important to stimulate your child’s creativity, curiosity, and discovery. All this can be easily achieved by making use of the educational crafts, games, puzzles and toys.

It may seem a difficult decision at first to decide on which educational toys and games to choose. Try starting out with a simple book or educational toy, and then slowly progress to more complex educational toys, music activities and puzzles. Attempt to create a fun environment for your child to learn in. Do this by taking note of your child’s interests – if he or she is into monsters and dinosaurs then based your decision on choosing the educational toys on this fact. This will make sure that your child’s interest remains with the toy.

Learn simple addition through play to encourage children to become familiar with numbers and slowly introduce them to math concepts, such as basic addition, counting and sorting. With some simple research into a child’s ability level and toy quality, you should have no trouble in locating a variety of educational math toys to spark interest while at the same time reinforcing the importance of learning mathematical concepts.

Kids toy manufacturers indicate their age recommendation on the toy’s box for a reason. Do not ignore this information and get waylaid by your child’s enthusiasm for the toy. If you want your child to improve on certain skills, give him toys that are appropriate for his age. Advanced levels of challenges provided by certain toys can be a source of frustration for your child if the skills needed does not match the child’s stage of development.

Safety is the biggest issue when it comes to kids’ toy selection. You should look at a toy as a potential health hazard. Stuffed toys are soft and cute, and most would think that they are the safest toys out there. This is actually a misconception. Stuffed toys, usually animals or dolls, that are intended for children over three years old might have eyes or other accessories that are potential choking hazards for younger kids. Choking hazards include any sewn-on, soft, or small parts that can be bitten off. To be on the safe side, remember this rule of thumb – if the toy is small enough to fit a toilet paper tube, then it is unsafe for children under three years old to play with.

Toys are not only for entertainment but also for your child’s mind stimulation. Where the child’s mind is stimulated, then there is an opportunity to develop social, emotional, and intellectual skills, among others. Children from age one to three like to have a mobile and tactile playtime. At this stage of development, playtime can indeed be messy because kids are interested in rearranging their environment. They like to empty or transfer objects from one place to another as a way of learning how things work.

Construction toys like blocks and stackers are perfect for kids in this age range. So are fit-together toys like shape sorters or simple 3D puzzles featuring familiar shapes like fruits, vegetables, and other objects associated with eating time. For children between three and six years old, pretend play is the name of the game. At this stage of development, children become masters of make believe so give them toys that stimulate their imagination. Little girls will enjoy dollhouses and toy kitchens while young boys will love to have their own set of wheels just like their dads. When shopping for your kids’ toys, help them choose the right ones by buying only what’s good for them.
