Toys that have some educational value are very popular right now. An educational toy can teach kids many necessary skills. The right type of educational toys for kids is highly dependent on their age and skill level. This learning from a toy starts at a young age no matter what.

Many toddlers are given the shapes and cube toy. This is where they learn to match up blocks with the shapes on the cube. But that is not all they learn. At that young age they are still learning how to control their arms and fingers. Grasping at an object and actually controlling the fingers to hold an object has to be learned. Then there is hand to eye coordination to take the block and place it up to the cube. It sounds very simple to someone that already knows this, but for a young mind, it is a first encounter. This is challenging but can be completed with practice.

Jigsaw puzzles pose a different approach than just learning to coordinate objects. When there is no border a strategy to complete the task has to be devised. The first one most use is to start with one piece and build upon it. This does work, but takes a considerable amount of time and patience. This is when most devise a new strategy of forming the border first then building the areas that are the easiest to identify. The speeds up the process and completion of the task can be accomplished faster.

The more complicated the toy is the greater the possibility of learning is present. Just make sure when you choose educational toys for kids that they can actually do it by matching their skills to the difficulty level of the toy.

An educational toy can teach kids many necessary skills. Kids can learn anything from cooperation to cause and effect to memory building by using educational toys. Though educational toys are a popular trend, they are not a new invention. The idea of learning through play has been around for centuries and is one that remains popular today.

For many years, toys have been used both for fun and for education. Very early toys had the purpose of both entertaining kids and preparing them for adulthood. Things like blocks would teach kids to cooperate and develop fine motor skills. Whereas games like tag and swimming built up strength so that kids could better do their chores and other strength activities.

Since ancient times, kids have played with simple playthings made from natural objects. They might play with rocks, grass, wood scraps or just games with each other to keep themselves busy. Sticks or rocks could represent soldiers or castles. Or a trinket could be fashioned from them. Historically, parents would create playthings for their kids like dolls, play guns, or rocking horses.

In the late 19th century, companies began making toys from new materials in mass. Many were made from plastic and metal as well as the traditional wood. Rather than playing with home made toys, kids started buying them from a store.

Many classic toys have survived to modern times. Favorites like rocking horses, play guns, and dolls are still widely popular today. But as culture has changed, so have trends in playthings. Rocking horses and play guns are no longer as necessary in preparing kids for adulthood. Our daily lives are more centered around technology and analytical skills rather than hunting or physical ability. Popular modern developmental toys reflect that.

The concept of teaching through play is still relevant today. Modern educational toys teach lessons that relate to modern society and the lessons that kids need to know today. Any toy can teach kids about the world they live in. But educational toys teach more specific skills that are important to their development.

Toys that are educational can teach kids about every area of life. They teach through play and develop intellectual, emotional, and physical skills. When kids play with learning toys, they improve a specific skill set.

Educational toys teach many different skills. They teach kids to be creative and build analytical abilities. The improve hand-eye coordination and teach scientific concepts. Teaching toys may encourage cooperation. They even teach problem solving, math and reading.

“Robots come in all shapes and sizes. But what does it take to design one?” You are about to learn. First, you’ll be assigned a mission for your robot. Will it be to search a sunken ship for gold? Or to explore the surface of Mars? Design your robot by choosing elements for six basic functions: sensing, movement, manipulation, energy, intelligence and looks. When finished, you’ll view your robot and your design will be critiqued. This totally awesome exercise requires the free Shockwave plug-in. Get it now.

This exhibit explores the jointed-arm robot which “looks similar to a certain part of your body.” Each direction a joint can move gives the robot one degree of freedom. So, a robot arm with three degrees of freedom can move in three ways: up/down, left/right, and forward/backward. Although some robots have six, eight or even twelve degrees of freedom, six is enough for most basic tasks, and therefore most working robot arms have six degrees of freedom. The human arm, however, has seven. Find out which movement you have that most robotic arms do not.

Robby the Robot is not the latest student project from M.I.T. He’s a classic robot toy. Brian Hayes of England, shares with us his passion for collecting vintage robot and space toys. To view these gems from the fifties and sixties, visit his Robot Gallery and Classic Plastic. If you wonder how much that robot toy found in your attic is worth, Brian has a bulletin board and posts free classified ads.

Since the first soft toy hit the scene, many years ago, it has become perhaps the most favoured toy amongst the millions on offer. Traditional toys – the teddy for example – have been given to children throughout the ages. Many have grown so attached to them that they still keep them even though they, and the bear, have reached pension age. Of course, fashions change over the years and today’s child has more choice in soft toys than anyone can imagine. Rag dolls, elephants, sheep, rabbits etc., Bright colours abound and many are made in recyclable materials for the ‘greenies’ out there. For babies soft toys are perhaps the first in the baby’s life. Snuggly soft toys provide the touch sensation, one of the first the baby develops, and the baby will be more than happy to cuddle it in the cot. When the child progresses rattles made of soft materials, sometimes with a mirror attached will provide endless hours of fun. These, of course, are the more traditional toys on offer but still they are firm favourites amongst babies and parents alike.

Babies progress on an almost daily basis and a lot of soft toys provide the visual and aural stimulation to encourage the child to explore. Wobbly soft toys which make a noise when pushed or perhaps a toweling truck whose plastic wheels click when turned all add to the wonder and fun for the small child. When the child is older, more appropriate soft toys may be the rag doll type of toy. This traditional toy has progressed though. Today you may get a dog rag doll with removable clothes. Each piece of clothing will have a different style of fastening which will show the child how to manage when dressing him or herself. Snap fasteners, laces, hooks and eyes, zips etc., are all there and the child still has the advantage of a soft toy to cuddle up to in bed.

Rocking toddler toys are most children’s favourite toddler toy. Children in the age group of 1 to 6 years adore this kind of toy and it is a must for any child’s play pen. These toys are generally made of wood and this makes them extremely durable, sturdy and can be handed down from generation to generation. Apart from the fact that rocking toddler toys make for endless hours of fun and imaginative and pretend play they do play an important role in the growth of your child. A rocking toy is great to help your child improve and perfect his or her balance and coordination.

While rocking toddler toys might be the perfect gift for your little one, there a couple of very important things you should keep in mind before actually buying the toy. It is vital to remember that buying a rocking toy for a child between the age group of 1 and 2 years will be different from what you will buy a child who is 3 years of age. Toddlers in this age group are still trying to perfect their balancing and coordinating skills and therefore care must be taken to ensure that the toy is sturdy. Care also has to be taken to ensure that the toy is low so as to facilitate easy dismounting and mounting. You should also check to see that the feet of your toddler touch the ground when he or she is sitting on it. This is important to prevent accidents. The ideal height for the toy would be if the seat is 10 inches above the ground. You might want to ensure that the toddler toy has a wide enough arc at the base as well.

Buying rocking toddler toys for this age group is an easier task as these are easily available in the market. If you are buying this toy online however, it is important that you check the measurement of the toys as most toys that are made for the age group 1 to 4 years usually land up being small for 3 to 4 year olds. The glaring difference will be that a rocking toddler toy for a 1 to 2 year old will be shorter and wider than a rocking toddler toy for a 3 to 4 year old. These are generally taller and thinner. Today the market is filled with rocking toddler toys of various non toxic materials, like wood, plastic and fabric. The ones made of fabric are referred to as plush rocking toys. 1 to 2 year olds will be happy with simple rocking toddler toys. These come is various shapes and vibrant colours. A slightly older child however might prefer a rocking toddler toy that has a closer resemblance to the real thing. They also tend to prefer rocking toddler toys that have some sort of activity or sound linked to it. Wooden rocking toys are perfect for this age group.

Vintage rocking horses have been the much loved toy of children for centuries. They have remained a popular present, and cherished heirloom still found in baby nurseries and playrooms the world over. But where did these wonderful toys comes from? The toys found in today’s antiques shops have a long and fascinating history. And like all great tales, the story of the rocking horse includes princesses and kings, children and most of all magic. The original version is said to have been inspired by the wheeled, wooden horses used by swordsmen during the middle ages. Though these wooden horses were not toys but training tools, they sparked the imagination of toy makers and led to the development of what we now know as the toy rocking horse. The traditional design which has become increasingly popular with children, complete with saddle details, rocking base, reins and painted accessories was introduced to well-to-do children in the middle of the 18th century.

In the 19th century, as a result of the industrial revolution, these toys started to be made in abundance and were accessible to families from all walks of life. However, the vintage rocking horse design so collectable today did not become popular until it was given “royal approval” from a very special young queen. Unlike other toys, as time went by, love for these horses did not dwindle, but rather grew and spread. The horse toys collected today range from elaborate carousel designs of the 18th century to more modern models which were mass-produced and purchased in the 1900s. If you are a collector interested in purchasing a vintage rocking horse, do your homework and enjoy the history! After all, it is the story behind a collection which really makes the magic come alive.

There is a surprisingly wide range of puppets available in children’s toy shops today, and the theatrical representation is not limited merely to characters, but to accompany the puppets it is now possible to purchase a full theatre, complete with curtains and scenery in which to play out a life upon the stage.

The smallest, cheapest and most easy performed are the old fashioned finger puppets – literally single finger characters. These puppets are small and simple in design, and fit onto a single finger. The degree of performance is largely dependent on the acting expertise of your finger; a little waggling and bending is generally all that is required, but is unlikely to win many awards. These puppets are delightful for small children, and can be used in a number of ways.

Most puppet sets like these come in character groups from famous nursery rhymes or fairy tale stories, such as Little Red Riding Hood. These puppets can be used by the parent to help bring a story alive to a young child, who will delight in the characters being animated in this way. Eventually the child can take over one or all of the puppets and play out the story themselves as the parent reads it to them, or play out the full story to themselves at any time. It is also wonderful for children who are young, but not the youngest in the family, to have a chance to use these character puppets themselves to tell the story to a younger brother or sister.

Moving up the ladder of complexity are hand puppets, or glove puppets as they are sometimes known. These usually just fit over the whole hand, down to the wrist, and allow one or both arms of the character to be waggled and waved using your thumb and little finger. The remaining fingers fit up into the puppet’s head and allow for nodding and shaking. Sooty and his friends were well know examples of these sorts of puppets, and children will not only enjoy talking to these creatures, but actually using them themselves.

An alternative type of hand puppet is one which usually fits further down the arm, sometimes right down to the elbow, and instead of having animated limbs, has an animated mouth instead. The thumb is inserted into the lower jaw, the remaining fingers in the upper jaw which also serves as the head. The mouth can then be animated, and often the children will be so distracted and absorbed by the creature that you need not worry about your ventriloquial skills!
